I write in my journal every day with purple pens because they make me feel like Harold & the Purple Crayon.
That book is so spiritually & metaphorically evocative that it gives me thrills.
Harold can mindfully decide what to make in his universe, creating a world from his thoughts. He starts off drawing things that make him happy, but at one point, he sketches things so powerful that he even scares himself! Of course, a few flicks of his crayon, or even better, a moment of curiosity about his creations, and a new pathway opens towards compassion, understanding, & deeper respect for his own magic.
Crayon = magic wand for some people, but I think it's NOT a wand for a reason. A crayon is something simple; something most children have access to.
In other words, everyone has a crayon. Everyone can draw, write, speak whatever they want into existence: a set of circumstances & opportunities, happiness, love, a pretty purple moon, a new career… it may or may not happen as instantaneously as Harold's creations, but something always happen ifyou are brave enough to play.
I love this book because it is another brilliant "Emperor's New Clothes" truth from our childhoods that can re-invigorate our personal vision of our world. It's also just a really great story. It can be as deep as you'd like it to be.
It's your crayon, after all.
